AUSTRALIA OUT OF WORLD CUP

SOCCEROOS CONTROVERSIALLY BOW OUT
27 / 6 / 2006

THE brave Socceroos run came to an end in the World Cup Finals second round when 10-manned Italy sank Australia in the 92nd minute today.

Sadly it appears the referee made a poor decision when he awarded Italy a soft penalty against unlucky Socceroo, Lucas Neil - which led to Italy's matchwinner in the 92nd minute.

Replays clearly show Italian defender Grosso taking a dive over Neil's head - unfortunately this was deemed to be a trip in the penalty box!

Sadly the refereeing has been of an ordinary standard during Germany 2006, the infamous decision caused much controversey around the world in soccer circles.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Aussies but the team certainly brought together a whole nation, everybody had been on the Socceroos juggernaut since the team's opening victory against Japan.

The unexpected success gained National pride, no to mention International respect from other Soccer nations.

In Adelaide, 8000 people braved cold conditions at Adelaide Oval where the match was viewed on the superscreen. Skycity Adelaide were forced to turn away patrons (estimated 3500) - along with The Rosemont Hotel while many other pubs and clubs around town were also packed for the huge sporting event.

Italy 1 Australia 0
