ROUND 1
Modbury Vista O/35'S vs Ingle Farm O/35'S Richardson Reserve, Wynn Vale
Sunday May 2nd 2010
By Gavin Powney
Dads Army travelled to Modbury to play the Vista Over 35’s under the guidance of new coach LEE “NEIL CRAIG” PERKINS.
We all re-introduced ourselves to Vinnie, Scotty and Patto who rocked up for their first time. Vista were prepared for the mighty Farm and shocked us by swapping the pitch from horizontal to diagonal, and delaying the kick off until 12:15. From here it just went downhill, as did the pitch.
Pre match talk from coach Perkins and due to our salary cap problems I had to play up front. We kicked off (mainly to make sure I got a kick) and found ourselves 3-0 down in the first 15 minutes. Even though we had no keeper, Intham Vander Saar still had no chance with the 3 one on ones that they scored after we failed to make our passes count and coughed up the ball too easy.
We managed to play some good passing soccer, but again they got the ball and it was 4-0. Even they were amazed at what was going on.
Finally some value and we get one back after Towner smacks in a wide shot. Then we hit the cross bar, the post and the keeper but fail to hit the net.
Just before half time its 5-1. Coach Craig settles us down and makes a few changes while we chew on a few lollies.
Back out and Vinnie makes it 5-2 after in the first 5 minutes and begin to think that maybe the slope is worth 4 goals.
A series of free kicks outside the box, go sailing over the bar and into the car park, why can’t we score? Still we pepper the goals with attacks but all comes to nothing.
Then a fast break and an easy pass for the Vista forward to tap in to make it 6-2. Bean was sent on with instructions to score 4 goals, but alas, he wasn’t up to the task.
And that’s how it finished. Our second half was well worth the admission price the 5 spectators paid to watch us, but our first half cost us the game. We wanted play a second set (tennis joke for anyone who missed it) but Port Pirie needed the pitch and apparently our change rooms.
So not a good start to the season but good games by Kingy, Greg and Perkie, while Dazza did his hammi, usually lasts till round 4.
Intham was treated for a sore back. Coach Craig urged those who can’t train to get an exercise bike, but be careful as they can kill you (right Carl) we all had a good laugh. So home this week to Downs, which won’t be easy game.
No idea what happened to the Albanian cat this week, we are checking the local pounds.

ROUND 3
Elizabeth Vale O/35'S vs Ingle
Farm O/35'S Mofflin Rd, Elizabeth Vale

Dads army travelled north to play VALE
on a very hard and bouncy pitch. Another warm day, will it ever get cold and
rain?
With coach Craig stating last week that
he would “Start with his best team this week,” I was left holding the flag.
14 players this week, with no Miller,
Toomer or Patto, but Dazza was back after giving his hammi a 1 week rest...
(probably needed 3 weeks).
Our first half was our best soccer to
date as we put numerous passes together but failed to take our chances while
our strong defence starved the Vale of any real chances.
Neil hobbled off after 30 minutes and I
threw the flag to the Albanian Cat.
Stale mate 0-0 at half time, lots of
good passing but not much to write about, both Greg and Dazza were tearing up
the left side of the park, but unable to find anyone with their crosses.
10 minutes in to the 2nd
half and Dazza’s hammi went again, on came the Cat. Vale finally cracked our
defence and passed the ball under the advancing keeper from a wide angle to go
1 up.
10 minutes later and Towner’s hammi
went and on came Drogba.
Vinnie had a great chance to equal the
scores as he held off 2 players and ran into the box and put it wide from 3
yards, with only the keeper to beat.
Our legs were starting to run out and a
lapse in defence leads to 2-0 to the Vale
and that how it ended.
So 3 games for 3 defeats. Great team
effort, we just failed to score. Vinnie ran around like a grandad on steroids, others
with good games included Greg, Dazza, Scotty, Intham and Lee.
Oggy had at least 5 shots, 2 of which went
out for throw ins. Interesting to see how may players we have this week and if
coach Craig drops any for being out drinking too late, we may even need Belly
to play for us!
ROUND 4
Modbury Jets AFC O/35's vs Ingle
Farm O/35'S Jet Park, Modbury
Sunday May 30th 2010
By Gavin Powney
A home game away
from home as we travelled north to play the same team we drew 0-0 with in the
first round of the cup last week. No Scotty, No Dazza and no Towner, and did I
mention I scored?
It was a
beautiful autumn day and the pitch was a pearlier even with all the rain over
the past 24 hours. So 3 on the bench as Captain Miller wins the toss, probably because
the ref couldn’t understand if he called heads or tails.
Modbury kick off
and between the time it takes me to scratch my arse and pick my nose an we are
1-0 up after Patto steals the ball beats 3 players and scores.. think it was 20
seconds?
2 minutes later
Modbury score but it’s ruled offside. Modbury fielding a very tall team today and
giving us trouble in defence.
Then Greg has a speculative shot from wide
that some how goes through keepers hands and legs and rolls in for 2-0. Have we
seen a more humorous keeping error.. well not till the 2nd half…wait
for it folks.
So we are able
to keep Modbury at bay while having numerous attacks ourselves. Its still 2-0
at half time as Greg brings the snakes out. Coach Craig talks the talk, and
mentions if the Power can score 3 goals so can we, as we chow down on snakes,
and sells the importance of another clean sheet, but we need that 3rd
goal to kill the game off.
We kick off into
the wind (still no rain) and play some productive soccer, lots of passing and
yelling at each other but not able to get the 3rd goal. Lots of
shots from distance but not on target. Intham is getting a lot of the ball out
wide while Neil and Kingy control the middle.
Then Intham runs
the ball down the left and I make a run into the middle, he passes, I take a
touch and beat the keeper from about 30 yards with a Rooney Rocket. Kingy yells
at me for not passing to him, while coach Craig faints. 3-0 and the game looks
over and it’s just a matter of how many now.
Greg lets go
with another Rooney Rocket only to see the cross bar steal the show, with Vinnie
heading the rebound back to the keeper.
Then... out of
nowhere… a goal for Modbury. The winger with the ball having no one to pass to,
takes a shot from out wide which Bodo gets down to and stops, or we think so,
but then sees it roll under him and trickle over the line as we can only laugh
and cry. You had to be there.
So 3-1 and we
try to hold the ball now for the rest of the game. Vinnie is brought down by 2
players for what should have been 2 penalties but ref says play on, as he
continues to text on his mobile. We play the clock down and just as we threaten
to bring Toomer back on the ref blows the whistle.
Our first win
for the season. We looked a better side with Patto up front, giving us a bigger
target than Vinnie. The only downer was not having Towner there to see me
score. And all because we had some shooting practice at training. Thanks to
Dazza for running the line again. Home this week to Woodpeckers. See ya there.
ROUND 5
Ingle Farm O/35'S vs MC Woodpeckers O/35'S Walkley
Park, Ingle Farm
Sunday June 6th 2010
By Gavin Powney
Winter had arrived, but Graham Scott
hadn’t for the second week running. The undefeated MC Woodpeckers visited us on
a cool winters days with rain threatening.
The Woodpeckers were still introducing
themselves to each other as I arrived, very suspect indeed. Dazza returned to
the Ingle Farm line up after 2 weeks (2
years – Ed) off with his very dodgy hamstring.
The Woodpeckers warmed up like a Div 1
team, in comparison we stood around and chatted about the Aussies 3-1 loss to
the USA overnight, very professional of us.
We waited for ref Belly to arrive and
he duly informed us we kick off at 11:30 (actually checked the SAASL website ..
it is 11:15am) and we can bloody well wait for him as what else does he have to
do on a Sunday!!!
Miller lost the toss again, and we
kicked up hill into the drizzle.
Lots of good soccer to be watched by
the large crowd of 12. Our passing was much better this week as we knocked the
ball around and made plenty of space on the large Farm pitch.
Finally the soccer gods are on our
side. A great corner from Dazza skimmed off Vinnie’s head at the front post and
deflected in off the defenders knee for an own goal and 1-0 Farm.
Some good work by Patto up front sets
up Vinnie for a well worked goal to make the score 2-0 after 20 minutes. We are
all over them, even our midfielders were taking shots, well Intham called it a
shot, even though it nearly went out for a throw in.
Then just before half time, after a
great build up, Patto had a shot saved and gallantly won the ball back who
managed to cleverly pass the ball out to
Vinnie who smashed it in from 20 yards beating the player on the line to make
it 3-0 Farm.
The Woodpeckers seem to struggle going
downhill as our defence kept them to long shots, and apart from coach Craig’s brainfade
passes across goal, Bodo was kept pretty much untroubled in the Farm goal.
We came out in the 2nd half
hungry for more, but even I could see the at least 3 new players on the
Woodpeckers team. They attacked in waves and got one back with a fierce shot on
the angle that beat Bodo at his near post. 3-1.
We needed a fourth to kill the game but
struggled as MCW kept attacking us. Patto had the chance with a one on one but
hit it straight at the keeper.
After digging in and battling for a
good half an hour, we finally were rewarded with a 4th when great
work down the right ended up with Patto, who beat the defender and curled the
ball into the bottom right corner to make it 4-1 to the delight of one barking
dog.
Miller went down under a hard tackle
and limped off, and Droga made a 10 minute cameo. With 5 to go it became 4-2 as
a long range shot took a slight deflection and managed to go over our 6”3
keeper.
With the last attack of the game Vinnie
ran at the defence and with no shot on offer passed to Drogba only 15 yards out
but was not on the same time zone and the ball rolled by.
So a great result in beating 2nd
placed MCW. Our outstanding first half set up the win, with good performances
from Vinney, Kingy Greg and Patto. Cup game next week and revenge on Vista for
our shocking opening game. The good news was Dazza played a whole game, first
in 3 years I was told , but the Albanian Cat has gone walk abouts, we are
checking the local vets. Thanks to ref Belly, seems we only win when the Power
lose! (Fuck off Powney - Ed)
The Bodo count was 3 for today’s game

6
Modbury Jets Old Boys 7 Ingle Farm O/35'S
1 Modbury Sports Reserve, Ridgehaven
Sunday June 20th
2010

With the World Cup firmly on our minds Dad's Army took the shout journey up
Montegue Road to take on league leaders Modbury Jets Old Boys. Having taken
away MC Woodpeckers' 100% record in our last outing there was no reason why we
couldn't have given the Old Boys a run for their money.
Our prematch talk was of the usual - who's here and who isn't. Gavin was
absent so I couldn't pass on the dvd he had requested. There was a lot of talk
about the overnight's World Cup results and refereeing decisions. Once in the
changerooms the focus was on who would get what number.
As we made our way out the pitch the first thing I noticed was the size of
the pitch, which was considerably much wider than our home ground. With
everyone engrossed with World Cup fever there was not a vuvuzela to be heard,
but we were given the opportunity to play with the much discussed jabulani. At
the end of the day it's a ball that both teams play with so I say deal with
it.
I don't recall who won the toss but within a few minutes Modbury pumped a
ball forward to which the defence just stopped. Having noticed that no one was
going to chase the ball I made the decision that it would have to be me to clear
it. On a narrower pitch I probably would have got to it first, but this time I
didn't and having had the ball taken around me conceded the first half time goal
since coming to the club. Unfortunately there were a couple more to come in one
on one situations. On the whole we offered very little for our two fans who
Oggy had brought alone for the day and we went in at half time 4-0 down.
With some improvement in the second half we kept Modbury at bay for some time
before I had to be taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder that managed to
pop out whilst jumping to prevent a corner. Despite actually saving that corner
play restarted with a corner (????) after I was carried off. In my absense it
was up to Intham take the gloves (without actually taking the gloves). Just as
the paramedics arrived Modbury whipped in number five. That was as much of the
game I got to see but I am led to believe that it finished 7-1 to the home side
and that Brian was red carded. Perhaps someone can fill in the blanks.
I would like to say a special thanks to Neil who manged to get my bike back
to me.
Notable absentees: The Albanian
cat
Man of the match: Neil running the line
